Migration for Skilled Professionals
Australia’s Migration Program carefully selects migrants based on professional skills, English language competency, age, health and financial resources. A significant number of places are allocated to migrants with professional qualifications and trade skills.
Australia Needs Skilled Workers
The Australian Government identifies a changing list of occupations for which there is a shortage of skilled Australian workers. If you possess skills and qualifications matching an occupation on the list, you are may be able to apply for a visa as a Skilled Migrant.
Tradespeople such as plumbers and electricians, as well as qualified professionals such as doctors and nurses, may qualify as Skilled Migrants. If you have owned a business or operated in an executive management role, you may also qualify as a Business Migrant.
To qualify as a Skilled Migrant, you must meet basic English language requirements. In addition, you will be required to provide proof of your relevant skills and work experience.
Living in Australia
A Skilled Migrant visa may affect your living experience in Australia. For example, your visa will specify:
- How long you may live in Australia
- Where you may live
Skilled Migrants holding an Australian visa are required to acknowledge and agree to uphold an Australian Values Statement pertaining to lifestyle and customs in Australia.
Working in Australia
As a Skilled Migrant, you will be required to work in the occupation declared on your Visa application form. If you have been sponsored by an Employer, or an Australian State or Territory, you will be restricted to work within a certain geographical area.
