Oil and Gas Jobs for Indigenous Australians

Are you an Indigenous Australian looking for an Oil and Gas job? Even if you’re starting with no experience, Oil and Gas companies encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to join the growing industry. Indigenous people, especially those living in communities close to operational sites, are an excellent source of new talent for the resources sector. Leading companies want to employ this talent and have created pre-employment training and apprenticeships targeting Indigenous Australians.

Training Opportunities

A variety of training programs are available. The programs are designed to help Indigenous people gain a qualification and work experience that results in employment. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop a career and earn an excellent salary.
  • Pre-Employment Programs and Vocational Courses. Some Oil and Gas companies offer vocational courses to help you get a job in the industry. The courses develop basics skills necessary for employment, including reading, writing and mathematics skills. You may also learn about self-esteem, time management and health and safety in the workplace.
  • Site-specific Training programs. Although it varies from site to site, some companies offer on-site training allowing you to gain essential skills in a short time. This training is usually offered for roles where skills are easily and quickly learned. Such roles may include truck drivers, process technicians, drillers and blasters.
  • Apprenticeships & Traineeships. Many Oil and Gas companies offer a certain number of Apprenticeships and Traineeships to Indigenous people each year. Both options involve on-site training as well as at-home study and can take anywhere from twelve months to four years to complete. If you’re keen to earn nationally recognized qualifications, such as a Certificate IV in Civil Construction, choose an Apprenticeship or Traineeship as a surefire way to begin a successful Oil and Gas career.

Well Known Indigenous Employment Programs

Leading resources companies want people to know about their Indigenous support programs.

Examples of such programs include but are not limited to:

Look Local

A key purpose of these programs is to partner with local Indigenous people. Oil and Gas companies want to honour their obligation to ‘give back’ to the community. By offering jobs to locals, companies hope to develop healthy relationships with native title holders. If you’re an Indigenous Australian keen to get a job in the industry, start by contacting local Oil and Gas companies who are active in your area.
